Victory!   Medical Benefits For Firefighters Injured on Duty

President Cosola, and Vice President Krusen attended a meeting this month with Mayor Coble, Councilman Davis and Councilman Rickenman.    During the meeting council members stated that City Council intends to provide medical benefits for firefighters who retire as a result of injuries sustained in the line of duty.   Members of Local 793 demonstrated to the City Council and the general public via newscast that we are committed to banding together to fight for the rights of current and former firefighters.   Local 793 members attended the City Council hearing last month when the City Council heard the case of Fire Captain Ball who retired as a result of injuries sustained on duty and was denied life long medical benefits.   This victory greatly benefits Captain Ball, eight other former firefighters that have retired as a result of line of duty injuries and every current and future firefighter employed by the City of Columbia.   This victory affords each of us a greater sense of security; both for ourselves and our families.   As important as the victory itself, is the way in which the victory was secured.   Thank you to all local 793 members who sacrificed income from their second job or time with their families to attend Captain Ball's hearing and demonstrated the local's unity in this moral battle.   While the executive board can accomplish a great deal through meetings with local, state and federal officials, nothing sends a stronger message than when the general membership makes sacrifices to demonstrate unity in our struggle to ensure a safe and fair workplace.   As long as the general membership remains committed to demonstrating unity, the union can only grow stronger.
